September 2013
Walking around at the sports festival, R* approaches me and says, “He likes me.”
Pointing to the tall boy in her homeroom class R* adds, “He’s my boyfriend.”
“Oh, is your boyfriend nice to you?” I answer.
“So-so.”
“Is he mean to you?”
“Mmmm so-so.”
“What don’t you like about your boyfriend?”
“His face. I don’t like.”
“So you don’t like your boyfriend?”
“No.” R* says as she walks away.
Later in September
I point at a picture of a swim suit and ask, “What is this?”
“Mizugi!” My students say.
“Yes, that’s right but what is it in English?”
One student raises his hand and answers, “I know! Swimming underwear!”
December 2013
While I was teaching a lesson on mistletoe, I explain to the students exactly what this plant is used for during the Christmas season. As if on cue, the class goes silent, T* is turned around and says, “Kiss me!” to the girl behind him.
“I don’t know what’s going on back there and I don’t wanna know.” I say.
May 2014
Pointing to my middle finger, I ask, “What do we call this finger?”
L* says, “The fuck you, finger.”
Trying not to laugh I say, “Yes, that’s right but we don’t say that.”

In class, we are playing the Yes/No Game. Students have to ask questions that will elicit the following responses.
M* says, “Do you know my secret?”
Confused, I say, “No. What is your secret?
He takes a moment, gives a smile and says, “Gina, I love you!!!”
He takes a moment, gives a smile and says, “Gina, I love you!!!”

While playing the “Following Instructions” Game, I give out the last instruction, “Draw the face of your future wife or husband!”
One of my students says to M* Sensei, “Gina Sensei is my future wife!”
“A*, is this a love confession?” M* Sensei asks.
